Rishiri Island is part of the designated Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park. Mt. Rishiri, located at the center of the island, is one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan and is also called “Rishiri Fuji” for its beautiful appearance. The island is a treasure trove of alpine flora, and its hiking routes are popular. The unobstructed summit offers a 360-degree panoramic view.
Visitors can take a walk while enjoying the natural beauty of Himenuma marsh, where Mt. Rishiri is reflected on the surface of this lake, and Minamihama Wetland, where wetland and alpine plants come into bloom.
Rebun Island, part of the designated Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park, is also known as the “floating island of flowers,” where more than 300 species of alpine plants nurtured by the magnificent nature of Japan’s northernmost island bloom from spring through summer.
There are various trails where you can enjoy walking while taking in the diverse alpine flora and beautiful scenery.
When visiting Rishiri and Rebun, be sure to try sea urchin, a blessing from the ocean. The island’s fresh sea urchin, which feeds on mineral-rich Rishiri kelp, exudes the aroma of the sea and a sweet, rich flavor that can only be enjoyed in this area. You can also savor various other seafood delicacies such as thick and plump scallops and firm, fatty Okhotsk Atka mackerel.
This is a marathon race in which participants run a 55 km course around the island in 10 hours or less while enjoying the scenic beauty of Rishiri. It is a popular event, and many participants come from outside the island.
This is the largest summer festival in Rishirifuji Town! Boat races and fireworks displays are held in the Oniwaki district, and there are lots of food stalls and attractions where the island’s marine products can be tasted.
In the Oshidomari district, the main street is turned into a pedestrian paradise with stalls selling sea urchin bowls, grilled seafood, and local specialties at discount prices.。
The largest summer festival in Rishiri Town! It is held for 2 days in Kutsugata and Senposhi. The festival is energized by the famous Ukishima Ondo dance parade and the Donto Market with its many stalls.
A popular autumn event held at four fishing ports in Rishirifuji Town. Participants compete in the weight and the number of salmon they catch over the two days.
These events provide fun during the harsh winter in Rishiri, including a tire-pulling time race with cash prizes and many other attractions for men and women of all ages.
