Oddly Shaped Nabetsuru-iwa Rock

Oddly Shaped Nabetsuru-iwa Rock

Nabetsuru-iwa, a strange rock that has become the symbol of Okushiri Island, comes into view as you get off the ferry and head south. In southern Hokkaido, where there are many oddly shaped rocks, none is as impressive as this one! The name of this 19.5-meter-high rock comes from its resemblance to a pot handle (nabetsuru in Japanese). At night, it is lit up and looms beautifully in the dark sea.

Sea Urchin, Abalone, and Other Seafood

Hokkaido’s ocean currents and the rich nature of its waters nurture a variety of marine products. Okushiri is known as one of the best seafood sources in Japan. The sweet Kitamurasaki sea urchin, grown on high-quality kelp, and Ezo abalone, which is small in size but rich in flavor and an irresistible crunchy texture, are particularly well known.

The summit offers a panoramic view from the island’s center towards the north. In early summer, the entire area is covered with Japanese rose blossoms, and in autumn, the scenery is tinged red by the changing leaves. At night, you can see the beautifully shining star-filled sky.
